Training Camp

Junior AO
The Pembina Valley Twisters are part of the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League (www.mmjhl.ca), which is designated as Junior AO. (O stands for overage as this league allows 21 year olds) The MMJHL offers players an opportunity to combine hockey, work and / or education.

Scholarships and Academic Performance

There are 3 league scholarships available each year plus team scholarships.
In addition you will have the chance to showcase yourself to American and Canadian Universities / Colleges. (NCAA and CIS) The Twisters are dedicated to the development of the player's academic performance and future. (Educational advisor available) When we moved the team to Morris our long term goal was to get players recognized by other leagues. This season so far we have had 3 different US colleges contact us regarding 3 different players (Division 2 and 3). Next season we will be launching an online database to allow all colleges and universities to track our players progress online.

Team and League

The Twisters are based in Morris, and play a 45 game schedule, plus exhibition games with 10 teams that are based mostly in Winnipeg. The Twisters were league champions in 2007/ 2008 season.

Coaches Corner
The offseason has continued as expected and we are excitedly getting ready for training camp on September 1st. While I don’t have any blockbuster moves to report, we have been able to get some quality players to commit to camp and are looking forward to seeing them on the ice. As is always the case, we are also waiting to see how the MJHL camps shake down and expect to see some more quality players in the early days of camp. Tony Partridge, Mitch O’Brien and Brody Mullin were all key contributors on last season’s team and each arrived after battling through MJHL camps.
As far as staffing goes, the coaching staff has been rounded out with Ryan Steppler and Phil Letkeman joining the program. Ryan is the older brother of former Twister Craig Steppler who was a member of the 2008 championship squad. In 2009-10 he was the head coach of the Carman Cougars of Zone IV Hockey where his team was able to push the Morris Mavericks to the brink of elimination before losing in double overtime to the eventual champions. His playing career saw him mind the nets for the Mountain Mustangs before moving onto the Bottineau Lumberjacks and the St. Malo Warriors. He also attended Mayville State where he played baseball and completed his teaching degree. He is teaching in Manitou this year and is excited about the opportunity to coach at a higher level.
Phil is a graduate of the W.C. Miller Aces, the Pembina Valley Hawks and the Portage Terriers. He competed in the league finals at each level and was a member of two championship teams with the Terriers. I had the chance to coach Phil with both the Aces and the Hawks and know that his “team first” mentality as a player will continue in his role as Assistant Coach. He is also acting as the Assistant GM where his efforts are focused on recruitment for the upcoming season.
With Denis “Doc” Moreau returning as the trainer, the team is ready to get started on another journey toward the top. As is always the case, our ultimate goal is to win a league championship but there are many steps on the journey. First, we want to be the hardest working team in the league and earn home-ice advantage come play-off time. If we are able to do that, we will be set up for another long play-off run that hopefully ends on a happier note than last year.
